SAN MATEO (07-21-95) - Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Internet-related software contributed to record earnings for the fiscal year, up 81 percent, and to a 65 percent leap in profit for the fourth quarter, Sun executives announced July 18.

Earnings for the quarter that ended June 30 reached an all-time high of $128 million in US currency, or $1.26 per share, up from $78 million, or 82 cents per share, for the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was also a record $1.65 billion, a 17 percent increase from the $1.4 billion a year ago.

For the year, earnings were $356 million, or $3.61 per share, up from the $196 million, or $2.02 per share, reported last year. Revenues for the 1995 fiscal year increased 26 percent to $5.9 billion from $4.69 billion a year ago.

The Internet and its associated technology are driving much of Sun's current momentum, said CEO Scott McNealy. He noted that the company introduced several new Internet-related products at SunWorld Expo in San Francisco in May, including Java, HotJava, and SunScreen.

Sales were particularly strong in Europe, Korea, China, and other parts of Asia, according to Michael Lehman, Sun's chief financial officer. --Elinor Mills
