Purpose of Job
To pursue all advertising opportunities through creative and imaginative sales techniques, which maintaining a professional and consistent performance in fulfilling sales goals. Must offer inspired leadership, demonstrating skills to overcome buying objections. To service and maintain all advertising after the sale is made. To represent SunWorld Online at trade shows and other meetings.
Major Areas of Responsibility
- Set strategic and tactical goals
- With Publisher, develop strategic plan for selling advertising in an online magazine.
- Help set page rates and revenue targets
- Help establish proper spending levels to achieve revenue goals
- Work with Publisher to create appropriate sales tools
- Provide competitive feedback to Publisher so that marketing strategies are developed with necessary information regarding tactics and strategies of competing media.
- Advertising sales
- Call on clients and advertising agencies presenting pertinent information that will enable the Sales Director to reach the sales goals.
- Must exercise independent judgement as to the manner in which each prospect is pursued, while keeping the Publisher advised as to opportunities, prospects and problems.
- Advertising prospecting
- Review competitive media for prospects
- Keep informed of developments in the industry
- Understand nature of prospects' businesses to minimize wasted sales efforts
- Customer support
- Support the advertiser after the sale
- File maintenance
- Keep files relating to sales and administrative details in an organized and complete manner
- "Workbook" of active accounts and prospects must be updated every 30 days
- Create and maintain complimentary subscription and promotion lists
- Report generation
- All sales calls require a call report
- Verbal discussion about complex sales situations should occur with Publisher on an as-need basis
- Courtesy letters should follow every major sales presentation
- Credit clearance
- Sales Director is responsible for maintaining company credit clearance policies.
- Sales Director should help clients complete credit-checking forms
- Sales Director should help clients resolve credit problems with Credit Dept.
- Marketing materials creation
- With Publisher and other appropriate staff members, create effective sales and marketing collateral
Evaluation Criteria
The above tasks will be evaluated on the basis of productivity, quality, reliability, creativity and leadership. The Sales Director will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Ability to define, identify, price, and sell advertising in SunWorld Online
- Meet advertising, revenue, and marketshare goals
- Provides customer service
- Supports and demonstrates a high level of energy and enthusiasm
- Monitors competition and reports competitive activities to the Publisher

- Experience in selling advertising
- Maturity in carrying out job responsibilities
- Good communications skills
- Eye for effective marketing materials
- Ability to recognize and respond to problems and opportunities
- Creativity, self-motivation and the ability to work well with others
