Furthering its push into the enterprise-class server realm, Sun will acquire Cray Research's Business Systems Division from Silicon Graphics Inc. This move follows on the heels of Sun's expansive Ultra Enterprise server product family announcement in April. The Cray Business Systems Division designs and manufactures the CS6400, a SPARC/Solaris system based on the SPARCcenter 2000 that scales up to 64 processors. The CS6400 is compatible with Sun's existing server line.
The Cray Business Systems Division, based in Beaverton, OR, will report to Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC)'s Enterprise Server and Storage Group. "With the acquisition of this division, Sun will gain an extremely talented group of employees with expertise in delivering scalable and reliable solutions for high-performance decision support, online transaction processing, business analysis, and technical computing," said John Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of SMCC's Enterprise Server and Storage Group. He said that Sun is committed to supporting Cray's existing base of CS6400 customers and plans to provide future products for them.
Cray Research, the parent company of the Cray Business Systems Division was recently purchased by Silicon Graphics.
Sun expects the deal to be finalized by mid-August and will release further details then. The company recently completed its acquisition of Integrated Micro Products, a U.K.-based supplier of fault-tolerant computing products for telecommunications companies. --Carolyn W.C. Wong
