Boston -- Sun Microsystems Inc. and Netscape Communications Corp. tightened their strategic alliance on Internet and intranet technologies with the announcement that WebNFS, Sun's Internet file system, will be supported by future Netscape products. Netscape also pledged to ensure that Sun's Joe connectivity software will work with the Netscape ONE (Open Network Environment).

WebNFS, which allows users to access files stored on the Internet and intranets, will be embedded in future versions of Netscape's Communicator client software, officials said. The companies will also jointly promote, license, and market WebNFS. In addition, Netscape and Sun will work together to assure interoperability between Sun's Joe and Netscape ONE, allowing Java-based clients to connect via the Internet Inter ORB Protocol (IIOP). Joe is part of Sun's Solaris NEO product family.

Other companies to have announced support of WebNFS in their products include Oracle Corp., Spyglass, IBM, Apple Computer Inc., and Novell Corp.
