The Square of the Slovak National Uprising

The Square of the Slovak National Uprising is the centre of the town. In the upper part there is a clock tower from the year 1552. When it was most recently reconstructed, it leaned about 40 cm. It was also a watch tower. In the 18th and 19th centuries buglers' concerts in the top gallery could be heard.

The Church of St. Francis Xavier [photo] was built in 1715. It is a duplicate of the church II Gesu in Rome. Two towers were built in the front part in 1844. There are many valuable monuments in its interior.

The most beautiful house on the square is Thurzo's House. It is formed from two Gothic houses, completed by Renaissance elements. Gothic portals, a wooden beam ceiling, wall paintings of "the Last Court" and "Suzanne in the Bath" as well as two coats-of-arms, Anjou and Corvin, belong to the most precious monuments. Now it is the seat of the Central Slovak Museum.

House No.6 (the guild wine-cellar) is famous for its Renaissance coat-of-arms, crested vaults, and Prussian Baroque vaults.

House No.7 is remarkable for its black and white grafittio. In the archway there is a fragment of a medieval wall painting. Now the exhibition halls of the Central Slovak Gallery are there.

Beniczky's House - one of the most beautiful houses in the square - is number 16. There is a centre column in the main hall. The Renaissance portal is decorated by Szentivanyi's coat-of-arms with the figures of two miners in ceremonial dress. The first floor is decorated by arcade loggia. Beautiful lunette vaults with hearts, palmettes and other design can be seen in the interior.

The Bishop's Palace was built in 1787 under the reign of Berchtold, the head of the district administration. It was the residence of the bishop and the first president of Matica slovenska, dr. Stefan Moyzes, which is commemorated by a memorial tablet with a relief.

House No.22 is remarkable for its precious portal and vaults, its Renaissance bay from 1636 and for the works of art by the sculptor Jan Weinhardt of Spisske Vlachy. In the middle of the square there is a fountain, up is there a monument of the Virgin Mary and below it there a black obelisk - a monument to the Soviet army.
