Banska Stiavnica in the pictures
- Banska Stiavnica arms from

Among heraldic symbols it enjoys an exceptional position, not only
because of its age. The first Stiavnica seal is also the oldest
representation of town's fortifications which is a pre-heraldic topographic
symbol, and with mining implements set into the Arms.

St. Catherine's church has a one-nave construction with low side chapels
and a sacristy with Late-Gothic reticulated vaulting which spreads towards
the end of the presbytery without a triumphal arch. Built in 1488 - 1491.
Below the church a crypt is located, where magistrates and wealthy burgers
were buried.

The chuch was built originally as a three-nave Romanesque basilica of
St. Nicholas. This building from the 1230's was rebuild several times and in
1806 modified to the Empire style.

A National Cultural Monument, the Old Castle is located in the west part
of the town at the foot of Paradajs Hill. Various renovations since C13 have
altered the original appearence of the building.

The new castle is a massive six-stoyered, squared-off edifice with four
circular corner bastions. It was connected to the town walls on two sides.

Calvary consist of a complex of sacral Baroque buildings located to the
northeast of the Urban Conservation Area, on a step hill named Scharfenberg.
It was built during the years 1744 - 1751.

Built to commemorate the victims of the Black Plague. The architectural
elements of the column were created by K. Holznecht, one of the best
stone-masons in central Europe of that time.
- Klopacka - the Baroque
tower-shaped building (1681). [46 kb]
It contained the "clapper", a kind of alarm which was used for summoning
the miners up by means of its sound. The sound was produces by clapping
together two resonant wooden boards.
